Intel China Essay Example

Intel China Essay What are the purposes behind Lis conduct? Yong Li, one of the AM’s for the firm has just accomplished a specific degree of progress inside the essential focal point of Intel’s procedure to create associations and relationship with the customers in his record base. Li is cognizant to the way that his achievements as an Intel minister is undeniable and thusly to get extra an incentive to his job he has set exertion, time and plan to one of the individual ventures he has embraced to self ad lib and adopt an extensive strategy to the enumerating of the specific undertaking. Li is self-propelled to accomplish hardened focuses on that he sets out for himself, anyway the choice got from Tang’s office to scrap out the task by implication through Qing Chen following two months of exertion was considered as an affront to his gauge and skill. Li encountered a moment withdrawal with his prompt director and chief as he felt that his difficult work, by and large execution and the exertion put in his drawn out methodology in the task was dismissed with no thought by the new leaders of the division. 2. What are the jobs of Chinese and Western societies in these occasions? We will compose a custom article test on Intel China explicitly for you for just $16.38 $13.9/page Request now We will compose a custom paper test on Intel China explicitly for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Recruit Writer We will compose a custom paper test on Intel China explicitly for you FOR ONLY $16.38 $13.9/page Recruit Writer The contextual investigation presents a point of view of the fundamental difficulties inside China Intel Corporation the board styles that is flanked between a western corporate working and eastern ways of thinking dissuading a smooth administration change procedure and bringing up issues on dynamic and coordinating individuals towards a shared objective of the organization. Charles Tang initially a local from China has as of late moved back from US as Intel’s new advertising head; anyway the workers and authorities see him as a youthful ostracize who is new to the â€Å"ways of the place†. At first Tang in his connections with the Chinese authorities was dubious as his immediate reactions held no weight in certainty. Tang soon discovered that his style of replying in a straight forward manner without setting aside some effort to mull over on the responses was not tolerating into the Chinese culture. He built up validity as he adjusted another stroke change by methods for requesting extra foundation data and time for his manager to settle on an official conclusion. Anyway Tang communication with his group was guided by Intel’s proficient set of accepted rules strategy on the â€Å"disagree and commit† theory. At the point when Tang settled on a choice to rebuild and smooth out the group assignments so as to progress Intel China vital goal, he got Yong Li’s outrageous passionate response of â€Å"losing face† which implied weakness between the connections of the two gatherings. As a ranking director, Tang observes the impact of on the authoritative culture conferred from a workers change in conduct because of his choice. Despite this issue, Tang has required a joint gathering to determine the issue as he inside accepts an open conversation will deal with the complaint; anyway he faces the strain to convey steady dynamic conduct at his rank level. The conflict of philosophies inside Tang is brought about by his own style embraced in the west of managing and understanding individuals in an open style and the new key obligations he should follow and organize for the organization to succeed. The contextual analysis doesn't intricate much about Qing Chen, the new departmental manager’s job in the organization. Qing Chen according to directions has passed on the choice to cease the venture in an absolutist way to Yong Li. Anyway her job as a prompt director doesn't end with handing-off data just and she is required to play out a key and dynamic job associated with seeing day by day activities of the group and guiding them as needs be so as to overcome any issues between the senior management’s vision and the AM’s jobs towards the objective. 3. How might you have taken care of the circumstance with Li? Would there have been an approach to conceal any hint of failure? In this situation being viewed as an ostracize, each activity taken according to the need of the job is seen partiality. Consequently the test before driving the representatives to play out their objectives must include building trust and certainty among both the gatherings in question. Charles Tang at his level is embarked to settle on key choices and can't be totally engaged with smaller scale the board; anyway his subordinate Qing Chen must be assigned to be effectively associated with the day by day activities and furthermore comprehend the team’s including Yong Li’s mien at work, general perspectives, group elements, ethnic foundation and goals. As this circumstance has lead to one of the essential performer’s of the group â€Å"losing face†, it is fundamental for Charles Tang to address the whole AM group in a gathering to express Intel’s vital objectives and emphasize that commitments at work are esteemed anyway they should be engaged towards accomplishing the normal target of Intel. At this stage the company’s â€Å"disagree and commit† reasoning must be returned to make the colleagues mindful of it. He should underline that the team’s direct contact and every day refreshes with Qing Chen must be followed. Toward the end Tang must value the top entertainers of the group and declare his arrangements to reevaluate existing ventures according to the methodology. The one on one gathering with Yong Li must be coordinated cautiously to evade any enthusiastic capture of the choice previously taken. Anyway the principle expectation of the gathering is to work back the Yong Li’s certainty and reestablish his believability by understanding his perspective on the extent of the task. In the event that during the audit, new light is tossed upon the significance, range and plausibility of the undertaking, Charles Tang might be required to return to his choice and set cutoff times for the venture. At the same time, Qing Chen must be a piece of the survey and the AM’s must be told on giving standard updates to her. In like manner she should be separately clarified on her responsibility towards the team’s execution and updates. 4. What must Intel do in China in the event that it wishes to draw in and keep the best and most brilliant workers? An American global organization, for example, Intel to exist together and exceed expectations in china should initially see how Chinese organization and work reasoning varies from American corporate culture. To oversee expected multifaceted clash, worldwide directors like Tang must be outfitted with aptitudes to be increase smart information on the subtleties of the Chinese culture so as to draw out the best in individuals. Furthermore, according to Intel’s theory to energize development the organization has confidence in empowering dispute through the â€Å"disagree and submit philosophy†. Anyway reassuring difference to propel viability by no means suggests contortion of the announcing lines. Consequently the corporate force structure must be reestablished through the vertical administrative chain of importance. As the top of the food chain of the administration is seriously engaged with arranging and creating programs locally and joining its skill through worldwide reconciliation, at the same time regulating the organization of the record directors by the chiefs must not be disregarded. To improve the revealing lines between the chiefs and the record directors, the administrators must be enabled to settle on choices with a more extensive extent of power. For this situation, the administrator must have their ears to the ground to tune in to different thoughts and procedures from the workers through which a consistent commitment and ordinary execution progress track report is kept up. To endeavor towards the vision of the organization, improving inside correspondences inside the association might be thought of. Empowering and hailing smart thoughts at work through a straightforward and reasonable framework like a motivating force or acknowledgment program might be formulated to fabricate a corporate culture to help constant development inside the organization.

In one vignette, Alan Dershowitz, Yale ‘62LLB, Attorney, Harvard law teacher and top of the line writer, told an astonishing (and very elegantly composed) story (The Class Ill Never Forget): In his first-year Torts class, Dershowitz got a feared D on his initially composed task. His Professor, Guido Calabresi, composed a remark inferring that Mr. Dershowitz, however a sound scholar, probably won't be fit to the act of law because of his shoddy composing capacity. The issue, as Calabresi expressed it, was that Dershowitz composed as though he were â€Å"having a discussion with [his] companions in Brooklyn.† The teacher worked all semester to step Dershowitz’s reviewing to a satisfactory level. Obviously it worked. Will you ever learn? Dershowitz isn't the main author fit for being prepared. For a long time, for example, I have been altering my mother’s New Year’s letter. It used to take a great deal of work and a ton of verbal grappling with Mom. These days, I breeze through in almost no time with next to no to propose. Mother adapted as well! She is currently probably the most honed proofreader. The uplifting news is: It’s never past the point where it is possible to begin perusing. Would you like to raise the degree of your composition? On the off chance that you have a drive that includes open travel, or on the off chance that you have a sluggish Sunday evening available to you, why not get one of the classics†¦ or perhaps an Alan Dershowitz epic will be all you need. 2. Peruse Aloud Perusing your composing out loud can likewise improve your composing ability. Once in a while something as straightforward as tuning in to yourself will guarantee that your composing works. On the off chance that you stumble over a sentence or a word when reciting for all to hear, or on the off chance that you start to exhaust yourself, it’s time to alter until you like what you hear. Any vacillations in tax assessment levels in the business are more likely than not conclusively gave to the customer. Exchange issues will influence Starbucks transcendently when sending out and bringing in products. At the point when another country’s government forces a tax it not just outcomes in an effectiveness misfortune for Starbucks yet huge salary moves can get conflicting with value. This additional charge can transform a deal into a sham. Additionally, since 9/11, exchange relations have been unfavorably influenced between the USA and some different nations. Starbucks ought to altogether explore the political security of any nation they intend to grow to. Changes in government can prompt changes in tax assessment and enactment. The American races may affect Starbucks as new enactment or new or existing government may acquire charges. Likewise, those nations in political disturbance or common war (for example Zimbabwe at present) ought to be drawn closer with extraordinary alert while thinking about new pursuits. The worldwide economy must be brought into thought as it can influence Starbucks’ deals and markets. The outcome of 9/11 was a case of a financial downturn that influenced the world market. A decrease in authorizing and license costs in those nations creating the espresso bean for Starbucks would bring down creation costs for ranchers. This sparing would thus be given to the buyer. Starbucks are influenced by trade rates when managing worldwide exchange. On the off chance that the estimation of the money falls in the nation of an espresso provider this empowers Starbucks to get more for their $ or  £ when bringing in the products to their nation. This sparing can be passed along to the client. Trade rates are everlastingly changing all through the world in today’s showcase. Social: Where salary is conveyed is another factor that Starbucks should take a gander at as this likewise shows the perfect spot to point their showcasing or to find their stores. Society and Femininity Essay -- American Literature Essays

Society and Femininity: Triumph of the Human Spirit Not many books in American Literature can procure the title of immortal. These books rise above the ages, since they have a more noteworthy importance. Their accounts show individuals life, the brilliance of the human spirit, and everything it can suffer to survive. Three books specifically get to the very heart of female battle. In spite of the fact that they contact not on women’s battle to cast a ballot, they arrive at the higher plain of women’s battle to be viewed as what their identity is and not what society needs them to be. To Kill a Mockingbird, The Color Purple and The Bluest Eye all arrangement with the subject of ladies attempting to conquer society. In spite of the fact that these books were written in the mid to later 50% of the twentieth century, they return to when the Great Depression was contacting all strolls of human life. Every one of the principle characters in these books doesn't fit society’s perspective on womanliness during the timespan . Despite the fact that the fundamental characters in the three stories don't fit society’s thought of gentility, they each, in their own particular manner, beat this and show a more noteworthy stunner of solidarity. Every one of the three primary characters in every one of these accounts neglect to satisfy society’s thought of magnificence and gentility. The lead character of To Kill a Mockingbird, Scout, is a multi year old boyish girl, during when young ladies aren’t expected to be spitfires. She gets a lot of analysis by her auntie and numerous others for not being the perfect youthful young lady. Harper Lee, the creator, communicates through the view purpose of Scout, â€Å"Aunt Alexandra was over the top regarding the matter of my clothing. I couldn't in any way, shape or form plan to be a woman in the event that I wore breeches, at that point I said I could do nothing in a dress, she said I wasn’t expected to do things that requi... ... isn't happy to surrender the battle by her astonishing want to need that youngster to live. Despite the fact that the book doesn't show Claudia in adulthood, one can imagine her as the exemplification of a tough lady. These three principle characters resist society as a result of their quality. These books become immortal in light of the female characters. Every tale challenges the desires for society in its own specific manner. They epitomize ladies who ascend over the normal to get more prominent than what a great many people are. The books show the female soul in the entirety of its brilliance; they depict its qualities and capacity to beat deterrents. Works Cited Lee, Harper. To Kill a Mockingbird. 1960. 40th Anniversary Ed. Perseverance Essay Example for Free

Determination Essay Determination is such an amazing word, that has such huge numbers of implications. Acing what this word implies, brings about such a fruitful life which yet takes a great deal of order to accomplish. Most people groups outlines of constancy is never surrendering in any event, when things aren’t going your direction. Which is right, yet I consider diligence in references of a portion of our world’s most noteworthy pioneers. Take for example one of America’s most prominent Civil Rights pioneers Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Individuals were so contempt, angry, and unfeeling to this remarkable man. Be that as it may, did he ever surrender when the going got extreme, no. Did he simply state, â€Å"Hey man, this is unreasonably difficult for me to deal with! †, no. What did he do, He continued pushing through. At the point when individuals were spitting at him or reviling at him or in any event, torching his home, he didn’t stop what he was doing. Presently you may inquire as to for what reason would somebody experience so much difficulty. Well that question is anything but difficult to reply. He never halted in light of the fact that he trusted in what he was doing. He accepted that the fantasy he was pursuing for, was to better the world and to better mankind. That’s why when he was reported expired everybody praised him on his incredible achievements. He demonstrated a plenitude of diligence. Nothing is superior to you. You ought to never surrender. You can enjoy a reprieve, however never surrender. Determination is a significant and positive character characteristic to have in your life. You must have consistent diligence notwithstanding challenges, demoralization, or impediments. Disappointment possibly happens when you quit attempting or pushing through. You can’t experience life stopping everything that is by all accounts too difficult to even think about handling. In the event that you’re attempting to exceed expectations in something you need to adhere to it, better yourself, and invest more energy. A person or thing is continually going to be there attempting to occupy you from accomplishing your fantasies as well as objectives. Your activity as an individual is to choose not to be diverted and relinquished whatever is holding you up. You must have confidence, expectation, consistency and difficult work to achieve anything. You additionally need to as sume liability for yourself. In the event that you need assistance request it. Odds are somebody has a similar inquiry as you however are simply too frightened to even think about asking. Being idealistic and having self-assurance help you to arrive at your objectives and purposes. Despite the fact that individuals express it more than others, persistence guarantees endurance as well as guarantees achievement. At the point when we want to accomplish something, it is an extraordinary inclination of achievement when the objective we take a stab at is satisfied. Tragically, all through our excursion, making progress toward progress there will be a lot of hardships holding us up. Just through constancy would we be able to vanquish those impediments that make our excursion harder. At the point when I used to experience difficulty with my homework with not handing them over, not doing it, or turning them in late, I was so befuddled. I used to be disorderly and wouldn’t pose inquiry when I don’t comprehend the work that was given to me since I didn’t need to be ridiculed. That’s what’s amiss with our age now. Nobody needs to pose inquiry in light of the fact that we’re frightened of being giggled at or ridiculed. I realized that I could show improvement over what I was doing. I realized that it would just get increasingly hard as the days went on and when I gathered increasingly more schoolwork. I returned home one day and chose to watch a film just to facilitate my psyche. I signed on my Netflix account and watched Pixars: Finding Nemo. This is one of my preferred youth motion pictures. As I watched it I heard the voice of Ellen DeGeneres who featured as Dorothy sing â€Å" Just continue swimming, simply continue swimming, simply continue swimming swimming.† That’s when my life pivoted to improve things. That statement had me understand that when the going get intense, simply continue onward. At the point when things become troublesome, simply continue onward. At the point when life tosses deterrents your way, simply continue onward. At the point when you feel like there’s nothing you can do, simply continue onward. My life has quite recently started tossing hindrances out me. I realize it will just get more enthusiastically as time moves on. Be that as it may, I’m certain and I realize I can deal with it. There’s no snag too large that you can’t handle. In the event that you feel as if it is too hard to even consider handling request help or direction. There will consistently be somebody who’s there to support you. Having an uplifting point of view toward negative circumstances are the way to progress. Having tolerance is another key to progress. Realizing that things require some serious energy and nothing comes over night is a decent method to think decidedly. For instance: in the event that you had an awful day at work, nobody was carrying out their responsibility accurately and andâ cooperates are accusing you is a decent time to show inspiration. You can request that everybody ensure their activity is done accurately and ideally the following day won’t be so awful. Without determination our reality chiefs wouldn’t investigate new grounds and human development would be unimaginable. An incredible number of current fruitful universal organizations were near bankrupting, however steadiness empowers them to remain and improve their organizations. Individuals who have absence of diligence either winds up poor occupation that pays not exactly the lowest pay permitted by law or with an enormously awful life circumstance. The vast majority are looking out for somebody to accomplish their work for them. Depending on the administration, law, and a few gifts yet never put in the push to accomplish their own work. A perseverant individual can stand all the challenges of the earth and make due in the most troublesome circumstances, including nature, ominous government, and so forth. Tirelessness to me is the assurance in an individual to not let anything or anybody prevent you from acquiring an objective. It is significant that everybody have persistence on the grounds that the vast majority would not make it in existence without it. It gives you morals and makes you a progressively more grounded and increasingly dependable individual. An individual who is exceptionally clever, and an academic virtuoso, however is lazy commonly, and hesitant to ingenuity, can barely succeed throughout everyday life, since he doesn't have the foggiest idea how to think carefully and work the correct way. In this world, all the extraordinary things have been made or developed distinctly by perseverance. In human life, determination assumes a significant job. Current science, engineering, writing, music-in each circle of life-tirelessness is the underlying driver of sucâ cess and wonder. Shakespeare didn't create such volumiâ nous works just in a day. He needed to buckle down during days and evenings with enormous steadiness to make such extraordinary gems. Consequently, determination must be polished from the very youth with the goal that the respectable propensity turns into an integral part of ones life. With that incredible resource or generosity, a man can walk effectively on the dangerous street of his lifes excursion; and achievement will be his and his as it were.

Writing Effective Essays for Academic Admission

Writing Effective Essays for Academic Admission In 500 words or less, where would you like to see yourself, professionally, five years from now? the application asked.I attacked the assignment with relish. Getting into this prestigious universitys summer fellowship program was extremely important to me, and I wrote draft after draft, trying desperately to give the admissions committee exactly what it was looking for in this all-important essay. Finally, I sat down and took a good, long, critical look at each and every attempt, throwing my hands up in relative anguish. Oh, they all sounded perfectly acceptable. Some even sounded relatively eloquent. But, to me, not a one sounded…right.I began to wonder just what it was that the admissions committee was actually looking for in this essay, and I began to worry that maybe I really wasnt summer fellow material. But then, one of the high school seniors on my debate team happened to glance over my shoulder as he reached for a book Id told him he could borrow. Is that your application e ssay? he asked. Can I read it?What could I lose?Hey, he challenged, narrowing his left eye. How about just practicing what you preach?Suddenly, it was clear. I had not trusted the advice that I had been giving to high school and college students for nearly twenty years. I had written an essay that could have been written by any one of a hundred other perfectly qualified applicants. I had tried to play it safe and write something professional and intellectual instead of really taking on the challenge of examining myself to determine just what it was that I wanted out of that academic experience. As a result, none of my attempts to engage in professionally correct writing had resulted in anything that provided a reader with a picture of me.A few days later, I gave that young man another draft to read, knowing full well that it was the one that would be included in my application packet, despite the fact that it consisted of 632 words on where I did not want to see myself, professional ly, five years hence. Even though I knew I hadnt followed the instructions to the letter, I knew I had embodied their spirit. I wrote honestly about who I was at that point in my life, a tired and even somewhat frustrated teacher. I wrote simply and directly about what I really did want out of that summer programâ€"a jumpstart. And I was accepted. The lesson? Ah, yes: To thine ownself be true.Weve all been given similar advice about things like blind dates and interviews. Be yourself, weve been told by everyone from Mom to Ann Landers to ex-General Motors CEO, Lee Iacocca. And that advice holds true when it comes to writing essays for admission to academic programs. The sheer volume of material that admissions committee members must sift through on a daily basis today is staggering. When the bulk of what they are reading is carefully scripted to sound correct, it becomes extremely difficult for committee members to distinguish one candidate from another as they attempt to narrow five thousand equally qualified applicants down to a pool of five hundred. So, how can you make your essay stand out in that crowd of five thousand? Instead of trying to say something that you think committee members might want to hear, give them the information that they need in order to make clear choices. Most of the essay topics provided on applications these days ask writers to address, in one form or another, these two basic questions:Who are you?Why is this the right program for you?So, tell them who you are. Tell them what you want out of your next academic experience. Tell them why. Be honest. Be direct. Give details, scenes, moments from your own experience. And most of all, be yourself.Remember your Shakespeare: This above all, to thine ownself be true.

Homer and Virgil in Miltons Characterization of His Epic Hero - Literature Essay Samples

â€Å"The reason Milton wrote in fetters when he wrote of Angels and God, and at liberty when of Devils and Hell, is because he was a true Poet and of the Devils party without knowing it† (389). While this analysis by William Blake recognizes clear stylistic choices John Milton made in his epic Paradise Lost, the implied conclusion is not accurate. Although Satan is portrayed to be a majestic character with many traditional heroic qualities, Milton does not depict him as the epics central hero. He instead reserves that role for Adam as a representative of humankind. An examination of the basic definition of a hero reveals that, although Satan is endowed with many heroic qualities, Milton intends this to be understood as a sharp commentary on the relative importance of these traditional values within the Christian world order. To determine the central epic hero of Paradise Lost, a concrete definition of the term and concept must be established. While etymologically meaning â⠂¬Å"the timely one,† this definition only partially describes the role of epic heroes. Achilles decides to rejoin the Achaean army just as all hope seems lost, just as Odysseus returns to Penelope right before her proposed remarriage, yet both Homeric heroes do more than simply show up at the necessary time. Instead, an epic hero is truly a â€Å"representative of a communitys values.† Continuing with the example of Achilles and Odysseus, it is evident that both men, to obviously differing extents, embodied the traditional values of philos, sophos, agathos, as well as the desire for kleos and nostos. It is because these values coincide with the values of Achaean civilization that Achilles and Odysseus are viewed as epic heroes. Likewise, it is Adam who is viewed as the hero of Paradise Lost because it is he, not his nemesis Satan, who is supposed to represent the â€Å"community values† of God and his world order. Although Adam succumbs to Eves entreaties to tas te of the fruit of the tree of knowledge, his repentance atones for this failing and constitutes the main body of his heroic actions. In Miltons Christian view, the failure of humankind is inevitable and it is the act of repentance that pleases God. This realization comes to Adam while he is talking with Eve.What better can we do than to the placeRepairing where He judged us prostrate fallBefore Him reverent and there confessHumbly our faults and pardon beg, with tearsWatering the ground and with our sighs the airFrequenting, sent from hearts contrite in signOf sorrow unfeigned and humiliation meek? (10.1086-1092)Gods response, after being brought these supplications by his Son, is merciful and hopeful, representing the importance that he, the true determiner of humankinds values, places in repentance and faith, not Adams fallibility and sin. Speaking of the eventual accession into Heaven of Adam and humankind, God proclaims:So death becomesHis final remedy and after life,Tried in s harp tribulation and refined By faith and faithful works, to second life,Waked in the renovation of the just,Resigns him up with Heavn and Earth renewed. (11.61-66)In contrast to Adams embodiment of repentance, Satans brash dismissal of his banishment, as well as desire to attack God and his creation, in no way represents the values that God (or Milton) projected onto humankind. It is also important in determining the epic hero of Paradise Lost to keep in mind the simple story-telling convention—ending the epic when the story of the main hero has culminated—that is constant within historical epics. Milton does not end his epic with Satans punishment—transformation into a snake—in Book Ten. â€Å"[H]e fell / A monstrous serpent on his belly pronepunished in the shape he sinned / According to his doom† (10.513-514, 516-517). Instead, the last scene of Book Twelve is reserved for Adam and Eves dismissal from the Garden of Eden. [T]he hastning angel c aughtOur lingring parents and to the eastern gateLed them direct and down the cliffThe world was all before them, where to chooseTheir place of rest, and Providence their guide. They hand in hand with wandring steps and slowThrough Eden took their solitary way. (12.637-639, 646-649).This clear emphasis on the story of Adam and Eve (as representatives of humankind) instead of Satan proves Miltons choice to place Adam in the role of the epic hero, not his counterpart. Despite these clear indications of Adams heroic role, it is impossible to deny that Satan is characterized as possessing many characteristics typically associated with epic heroes. His epic journey to Gods newly created earth is reminiscent of the great journeys of both Odysseus and Aeneus. Milton even goes so far as to reference these precedents within the text. And more endangered than when Argo passedThrough Bosphorus betwixt the justling rocks Or when Ulysses on the larboard shunned Charybdis and by th other whirlpoo l steered,So he with difficulty and labor hardMoved on. (2.1017-1022) This instance is but one of a myriad where Satan is placed within the epic tradition. Throughout the epic, his embodiment of the ideals of kleos and nostos, as well as his sophos behavior, make comparisons between Satan and other epic heroes inevitable, although ultimately misguided. Satans search for kleos, in many ways inextricable from his quest for power and revenge, serves as the necessary impetus for his tirade against God. Powrs and Dominions, deities of Heavn,For insce no deep within her guld can holdImmortal vigor, though oppressed and falln,I give not Heavn for lost. From this descentMore glorious and more dread than from no fallAnd trust themselves to fear no second fate. (2.11-17)While traditional epic heroes are motivated to do conventionally moral acts by their desire for kleos (the idea being, of course, that their respective communities would only value virtuous deeds), Satan chooses not only to at tack the Supreme Power of his existence, but also to provoke others into eventually doing the same. Miltons adaptation of traditional epic traditions serves as a critical commentary on the importance of values of this nature within a Christian world. That Satan, proud of his heretical views, exemplifies the same values that glorified Achilles, Odysseus, and Aeneus, seems to show Miltons criticism of the values of these Pagan epic heroes. Satans embodiment of the desire for nostos, especially through sophos actions emphasizes this further. Although Satans eventual decision to tempt Eve in the Garden of Eden is not directly representative of this fact, Satans original desire to confront God, be it directly or through the harming of his creation, comes from his displeasure in Hell and his desire to return home to a more satisfactory existence in Heaven. Is this the regionThat we must change for Heavn, this mournful gloomFor that celestial light? Be it soFarewell happy fieldsWhere joy forever dwells! Hail horrors, hail Infernal world! And thou, profoundest Hell, receive thy new possessor, one who bringsA mind not to be changed by place or time. (1.242, 244-245, 249-253)The nostos of Satan, like that of Odysseus, takes him on a similar epic journey that requires cunning in order for the voyage to prosper. Satan uses sophos behavior, through lies and false pretenses, to trick the Angel Uriel, residing near the orb of the sun, into pointing the way to Gods newly formed Earth. With flattery and insincere praise, Satan misleads Uriel into helping him.Brightest Seraph, tell,In which of all these shining orbs hath ManHis fixà ¨d seat[?]The Universal Maker we may praise,Who justly hath drivn out His rebel foesTo deepest Hell and to repair that lossCreated this new happy race of menTo serve Him better: wise are all His ways. (3.667-668, 676-680)Again, the way in which Milton negatively portrays values traditionally attributed to glorious epic heroes indicates that these v alues are not the ultimate determination of virtue and worth. Although Satan embodies many heroic qualities, this does not limit or diminish the heroic qualities of Adam, the true hero of the epic. The act of repentance—Adams most heroic moment—does not easily fit within the confines of traditional classification. Adam’s actions transcend the narrow confines of philos, sophos, or agathos categorization, and are instead an amalgamation of all three. Adams knowledge of the power of prayer and repentance, as evidenced below, prove his conscious decision to entreat Gods forgiveness. This decision proves to be the wise and noble option that allows for a relationship to continue between God and his fallen creations. Yet this will prayerOr one short sigh of human breath upbornEvn to the seat of God. For since I soughtBy prayer th offended Deity to appease,Kneeled and before Him humbled all my heart,Methough I saw Him placable and mildBending His earPeace returnedHome to my breast[.] (11.146-154) While the sophos action of repentance is not tricky and clever like Satans deception of the Angel Uriel, it is a wise, measured choice by Adam. Adam’s actions are in contrast with those of his counterpart Eve, who must be persuaded to not pursue her thoughts of suicide. This is logical because sophos actions are traditionally meant to be the mental component of heroism, and throughout the epic, Milton characterizes Adam as possessing intelligence and reason, while Eve is merely beautiful. Adam, conversing with Raphael, claims that God â€Å"from my side subducting took perhaps / More than enough, at least on her bestowed / Too much of ornament, in outward show / Elaborate, of inward less exact† (8.536-539). Beyond the intelligence of his decision to repent, admitting fault and accepting blame from God is brave and courageous. This stands in stark contrast with Satans cowardly unwillingness to assume his punishment in Hell. Furthermore, Adam s repentance, as well as the repentance that he provokes in Eve, foster philos behavior between the pair and with future mankind. Eve, expressing feelings within both herself and Adam, clearly voices her devotion to her counterpart, and thinks warmly on the human race they are destined to found. With thee to goIs to stay here; without thee here to stayIs to go hence unwilling. Thou to meArt all things under Heavn, all places thou,Who for my willful crime art banished hence. This further consolation yet secureI carry hence: though all by me is lost,Such favor I unworthy am vouchsafed,By me the promised Seed shall all restore. (12.614-623).Adam, sharing these feelings with Eve, clearly feels a strong connection not only to his partner, but also to the entire race of subsequent humankind. By understanding his responsibility to posterity, Adam models philos behavior through his repentance and willingness to accept responsibility. However, his remorse is more than just a way to be true to Eve and future humankind; it is the wise, noble measure that he chooses to take after his fall. Because his penitence can be characterized by sophos, agathos, and philos components, Adams greatest heroic act fits within the traditional value system prescribed to epic heroes, although in a somewhat revisionist way. Adam, of course, models other heroic mantels throughout Paradise Lost, notably xenia (when entertaining the Angel Raphael) and the importance of dreams as accurate predictions of the future. Once Rapheal is noticed by Adam, he calls immediately to Eve to prepare a feast for the dignified guest. Some great behest from HeavnTo us perhaps he brings and will vouchsafeThis day to be our guest. But go with speedAnd what thy stores contain bring forth and pourAbundance fit to honor and receiveOur Heavnly stranger. (5.311-316)Eve, quick to comply with Adams wishes, immediately begins to think â€Å"on hà ³spitable thought† and â€Å"[w]hat choice to choose for delicacy best† (5.332-333). These preparations, while thorough, depart mildly from the traditional guest-host relationship modeled by Homer and Virgil. Because Adam and Eve are unworried about material possession, they offer no gifts to their dignified Angel guest, but instead set forth a platter of abundance. Also different is the way in which the guest is portrayed. Unlike Odysseus and Aeneus who appeared before their hosts bedraggled and worn, Raphael is described as being â€Å"godlike† (5.351). â€Å"In himself was all his state / More solemn than the tedious pomp that waits / On princes [with] their rich retà nue long† (5.353-355). However, the exchange of information that occurs between the Angel and his host is very typical of the guest-host relationship found within the historical epics. Just as Odysseus and Aeneus recount their voyages and history to their benevolent (or enamored, in the case of Aeneus) hosts, Raphael narrates Satans rebellion and fall at Adam s request. [S]udden mind aroseIn Adam not to let th occasion passGivn him by this great conference to knowOf things above his world and of their beingWho dwell in Heavn[.] (5.452-456)Raphael happily obliges Adams thirst for knowledge, informing not only Adam, but also the reader, of the Satans formerly mentioned, although unexplained, rebellion. In addition to following the epic precedent of participating in the guest-host relationship, Adam also believes in the power of dreams to foretell the future, another important epic motif. Initially, neither Adam nor Eve believe that Eves dream foretelling her tasting of the Fruit of Knowledge will come to pass. Eve, while explaining the dream to Adam, expresses her distress. â€Å"The pleasant savory smell / So quickened appetite that I, methought, / Could not but taste / But O how glad I waked / To find this but a dream!† (5.84-86, 92-93). Adam proclaims his displeasure with the dream, but reassures Eve that it will not come to pass . â€Å"Nor can I like / This uncouth dream, of evil sprung I fear. / Yet evil whence?† (5.97-99). While Adam does not believe in the validity of Eves dream, he still recognizes that it appeared from some evil that previously had not been present in the Garden. Indirectly recognizing this evil, Adam foretells Eves temptation and their eventual fall. Much later in the epic, immediately before Adam and Eves dismissal from the Garden, this idea is explored more concretely. While talking with Adam, the Angel Michael lulls Eve into sleep and controls her dreams, proving that dreams not only originate in the subconscious, but sometimes from higher powers. â€Å"[Eve] also I with gentle dreams have calmed / Portending good ad all her spirits composed / To meek submission† (12.595-597). Eve, upon awaking, reinforces this concept, claiming that â€Å"God is also in sleep and dreams advise / Which he hath sent propitious† (12.611-612). The connection that Milton draws bet ween dreams and reality, while not identical to that within other epics, is clearly influenced by their precedent. In molding the characters of both Adam and Satan, Milton departs only subtly from epic tradition, most notably in his sharp critique of traditional heroic values. These values, while partially attributed to Adam, are more readily found within his nemesis, Satan. Instead of implying, therefore, that Satan is the true epic hero of Paradise Lost, Milton is rather suggesting that these traditional values are only of secondary importance and that true heroism stems from repentance and acceptance of Gods superior power and will. That Adam takes part in the epic tradition, while at the same time transcending it, is Miltons way of melding his strong religious devotions into the pagan tradition of Homer and Virgil.

Effects Of Scurvy During The Middle Ages And The Age Of Sail

Imagine having swollen gums, tooth loss, fatigue, bruising, and exposure to new disease, only to die a few weeks after. With education, medicinal practices and accessibility to resources, the risk of scurvy proves less viable in our modern society. However, scurvy dominated the outbreaks and contributed to the onset of other pathogens during the Middle Ages and the Age of Sail. With over two million died during voyages, the disease impacted the ability to explore the world, the economy and ended up wiping out new colonies established from the Old World (Harthorne, 1). Caused by a lack of education, mundane conditions and diet, Scurvy became an epidemic between 1500 and 1800. Thus, scurvy ended up impacting the Columbian exchange and the role of history. Scurvy occurs as a result of a lack of Vitamin C for prolonged periods of time. Humans regularly use Vitamin C to perform vital function in the body. In the Age of Exploration, sailors went without any Vitamin C for upwards of a month due to a lack of education, inhumane conditions, and the spoilage time for fruits and vegetables. To get enough sailors to voyage across the world, captains and current workers would capture people to join their crew, never to see their families again. The captured faced deplorable conditions, including working vigorously for hours on end, limited sleep, rats crawling around and fecal matter around them. Stress levels increase due to the barbaric conditions they faced. Age of Discrimination - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 3 Words: 863 Downloads: 4 Date added: 2019/04/01 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Discrimination Essay Did you like this example? Good evening ladies and gentlemen, I am honored to be here today to discuss with you an issue that has been around for centuries. An article was published in the Ms. Magazine recently about a young man Brent Staples who was singled out as different because of the color of his skin like many others around the world. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Age of Discrimination" essay for you Create order As you can see this story hits home to many individuals as well as myself because I am of color too. I would like to enlighten you today on this topic of prejudicial outlook on racial discrimination. For black people, experience holds a dear school, and the knowledge they acquire is based largely on the experience of living while black in a society that is dominated by non-black people. While American society is often ideologically characterized as privileging equal opportunity, the everyday reality of the masses of black people is that of being peculiarly subordinate in almost every way, but this is especially true when they venture into essentially white spaces. So, ask yourself why should people of color be treated differently? We self-question our self because of what other people think of our race. We are looked at as murderers, dangerous criminals, muggers and much more. Imagine living life every day in fear knowing that everywhere you go, everything you do is being observed and judged by people. Imagine walking to a convenience store or a clothing store and having someone watch your every movement thinking youre going to steal an item. Imagine being mocked and disliked at your school because your different from other people. No one likes to be left out, but then why do we judge? Why do you pass the torch of unforgiving world? Why do you set a fire of hatred? Why do we discriminate? Everywhere you look, everywhere you go, there is always somebody different from you. Many of us focus on differences and not on similarities of other people. Racial discrimination is everywhere. In general, its a belief that a certain race or ethnicity is inferior or superior to others. Racial discrimination involves ethnic origin, religion or belief. The first major point I have is that all people are created equal. In all holy books, it is mentioned that all people are created equal, so who are we to judge? The belief that everyone is created equally seems to not resist anymore. Thats why I am here before you to make you understand that discrimination against African Americans is an immoral act. Discrimination is experienced across a range and it may occur in a way by excluding people socially or by being indifferent to their views and experiences. It may take the form of stereotyping and prejudice of different types of groups in our community; in name calling, taunting or insults; or in actively and directly excluding or discriminating against people from services on opportunities. In its most serious appearance, racial discrimination is demonstrated in behaviors and activities that embody hate, abuse and violence- particularly experienced by groups who are visibly different because of their cultural or religious dress, their skin color or their physical appearance. For centuries, the issue of racial discrimination has been haunting millions of people wide world. Almost everywhere you turn; you see some form of discrimination. Research shows that its effect is greater on people that care about doing well. They also must be put into a situation where their skills or abilities might be in question, either in school, at work, or in public places. Being discriminated can change someones world. Emotional trauma and mental health effects from discrimination and stereotyping result in the most significant harm to an individual. There are other damages, such as loss of job or promotional opportunities, loss pay for days not worked, and damage to reputation. The people that discriminate or stereotype usually choose victims on whom to take out their frustration and anger. They choose those who are seen weaker or inferior to themselves. An important figure of color once quoted, There is not a liberal America and conservative America- there is the United States of America. There is not a black America and a white America and a Latino America and Asian America- theres the United States. Also, there were other great leaders and speakers before him like Eleanor Roosevelt, We have never been willing to face this problem, to line it up with the basic underlying beliefs of Democracy , and One of the main destroyers of freedom is out attitude towards the colored race. Including John F. Kennedys quote, This nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds ¦ on the principle that all men were created equal. Surprisingly, some research indicates a significant increase in racial discrimination over recent years. Its time for us to make a way. We can start in joining organizations and prompting positive relations. But there is a challenge in this for all of us. We share a common humanity, and we all have a role in r especting the right of all to enjoy it equally, with dignity and with the same opportunities to thrive. Thank you all for listening and everyone have a blessed day.

In a relational database, a logical and efficient design is just as critical. A poorly designed database may provide erroneous information, may be difficult to use, or may even fail to work properly. Most of these problems are the result of two bad design features called: redundant data and anomalies. Redundant data is unnecessary reoccurring data (repeating groups of data). Anomalies are any occurrence that weakens the integrity of your data due to irregular or inconsistent storage (delete, insert and update irregularity, that generates the inconsistent data). † (www. databasedev. co. uk) Assess the (3) most significant risks associated with combining products from multiple vendors into one (1) HRIS. â€Å"IaaS allows organizations to avoid the large capital expenses associated with infrastructure and data centers. It also has a low barrier to entry and enables automated scaling. One negative aspect of IaaS is that it brings with it new security risks that require different measures. For example, due to stringent information requirements associated with regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), enterprises must carefully assess where such information resides and mitigate any privacy risks. In addition, how well IaaS works is vendor dependent. † (cloudcomputing. ys-con. com) The major drawback that must be mitigated is the security risk associated with centralization. In addition, since applications are centralized, version control and updates are relatively headache free and deploying software becomes instantaneous. On the other hand, applications that are centralized present enhanced security risks. (cloudcomputing. sys-con. com) Predict three (3) unintended consequences of not managing an HR database properly and how y ou would circumvent those situations from occurring. What is the impact of a poorly structured performance management process? If individual goals are not aligned with business strategy, then time and resources are wasted. Low employee engagement levels may mean that individuals are not performing at their best. Inconsistent evaluation criteria and rewards can lead to mistrust, lower productivity and higher attrition. If top performers see no differentiation in performance ratings, opportunities and compensation from underperformers, morale can suffer. Lack of documentation, visibility, and accountability can negatively affect stakeholders who are demanding more and more transparency. If accurate performance information is unavailable or difficult to access, training and development decisions along with project assignment decisions may not be made in the company’s or the individual’s best interests. An annual process will not adequately alert managers to problems in a timely manner. Last, but not least, a lack of proper documentation related to performance may result in legal issues. Fire Safety In Car Parking Lot free essay sample

This paper focuses on car park fire safety. Numerous huge underground auto parks are found in the large residential, administrative and office areas. A large portion of them are developed in order to battle issues identified with indoor air quality, particularly the carbon monoxide radiated via autos, mechanical ventilation frameworks must be introduced to supply air that is natural. Because of an abundant number of detailed car lot fire mishaps in the recent couple of decades, vigour of these parking fires against regional fire is gaining expanding consideration. There has been an alarming matter about the outcomes of fires in auto parks related with present day vehicle construction for e.g., plastic fuel tanks etc. And how these flames may spread to different vehicles stopped ad-jointly and close-by. Thus , this paper will mainly highlight on various aspects on how these parking lots catches fire and sometimes may spread vigorously endangering the whole building . In this paper, we will also present 2 case studies on major car parking fire accident. (Liverpool ECHO arena car park fire)INTRODUCTIONCar parking structures are generally found in present day in most urban places. Such structures can be solitary structures or joined to other inhabitant compounds. The structures can be multi-story; over the ground or subterranean; be completely or halfway encased; and be utilized to stop a variety of vehicles. The increase in the rate of construction of underground parking lots, especially in crowded urban places leads to safety in fire a alarming problem. Due to which, reduction in the in-plan places have set rigid restrictions on the pathways of clearing, which needs a proper planning in structures and also due to crouched or low roofs and absence of openings has an effect on the scenario of fire and as well as the thermal fie ld. Thus, the after effect is that the temperature will be higher in these structures and may lead to more damage.Parking garage fires are pretty uncommon. They are likely to be limited to a single vehicle. According to a study conducted, only about 8 percent of incidents are area beyond the footprints of the vehicle where the fire has originally started. In simple words, the majority of fires are constraint in scope to a single vehicle. However the bad news is that we will never know when the fire will strike. The life security worries of tenants and fire contenders and the proper design situations for basic configuration have prompted the thought of the effects of fires in automobiles parking structures. CausesIn a car there is abundance of fuel which includes flammable fluids like petrol, engine oil and almost everything in the car is a fuel, from seats, to plastic used in the interior. Oxygen is abundant in nature and as long as we park the vehicle in a vacuum, subtracting Oxygen from the above equation is impossible. Depending on the miles the car has clocked before parking, weather, adjacent vehicle, state of the car machinery and human failure the possible causes are as follows: 1) Arson: It is very much possible that someone may alight the car, which can be a deliberate Violation (whether Routine, Situational, or Exceptional). 2) Electric malfunction. 3) Static electricity: Static discharges of the car or adjacent cars, through friction build up in the tyres, or wind blowing over the metal body causes ignition spark. 4) Radiation: If the car is parked where there is a radiation leak from the buildings or other one off scenarios where the other vehicles are carrying unsafe illeg al materials. 5) Electricity/arcing: This normally happens when we park the car under overhead electric lines. 6) Flashpoint/auto-ignition: The flashpoint of gasoline is -43 degree C, and auto-ignition temperature is 280 degree C, hence car temperature matters too.7) Poor maintenance: Leaking fluids, Overheating engines, Overheating catalytic converters, battery issues, bad gasket are all examples of poor maintenance which may lead to fire.

The Stranger free essay sample

The novel immediately starts off with Meursault receiving word that his mother died. He seems pretty indifferent as he goes through asking off work and attending the funeral. When he returns home from the funeral, he pretty much goes straight back into normal life as if nothing was different. He enters a relationship with Marie and befriends his neighborhood pimp, Raymond. Throughout, he remains detached from reality around him, being indifferent to the fact that his girlfriend is in love with him. His apathy (somehow) results in his engagement to Marie and they (along with Raymond) go on vacation to the beach. While at the beach, Meursault shoots and killed an Arab man who was the brother of Raymonds mistress. After his arrest, Meursaults attorney seems disgusted at his detachment and indifferentness to the murder in addition to his mothers death. When Meursault meets with the magistrate, the magistrate claims that Meursault is the antichrist. It is important enough to him and his story that he even studys the way it made him feel, and introspective quality not exhibited concerning many other subjects in his life. Scholar William Conroy says, Since this is virtually the only incident of his past life that he recalls, it is surely of crucial significance for him. 2 It is this crucially ignificant event of his childhood that causes him to lose faith in the order of society and makes him think that he cannot count on anything, especially people. Without his educational career as proof that hard work and studious dedication can result in success and happiness, Meursault resolves that life in general is meaningless, and that with or without ambition, both paths lead to the same disappointing destination. To try to protect himself from the inevitability of disappointment, Meursault overcompensates by regulating his daily routine. At Mamans funeral, the attendant ays, If you go slowly, you risk getting sunstroke. But if you go too fast, you work up a sweat and then catch a chill inside the church. She was right. There was no way out. (p 27) In this instance, Meursault is attempting to account for the inevitable, to literally and figuratively try to keep himself in a happy medium temperature wise and emotionally. To deal with the possible emotional strife of losing the last family member that the reader is aware of, Meursault chooses to concentrate on his usual regimented lifestyle, focusing on the days of the week rather than the events ranspiring. He is utterly passive, seemingly oblivious to the funeral as he concludes, It occurred to me that somehow Id got through another Sunday, that Mother now was buried, and tomorrow Id be going back to work as usual. Really, nothing in my lite nad changed (p 30) As William Conroy puts Meursaults misguided priorities, Sundays bother Meursault, not his mothers death. 3 By focusing on the aspects of life he can control, like his Sunday schedule, Meursault is able to focus on the things that do matter in his sphere, in this case the minimal behavioral necessities such as eing on time, going to work, eating, and sleeping. Contrary to what might be apparent indifference on the surface, Meursault subconsciously tries to avoid disappointing society Although he does not necessarily wish to marry Marie, he plays the role of boyfriend and even considers marriage because it is what she, and society expect of him saying, I explained to her that it didnt really matter and that if she wanted to, we could get married. (p 41) Similarly, Meursaults interactions with the priest and lawyer simply boil down to what Meursault has to do or say to please them so they will leave him alone. While telling his story to the lawyer, Meursault says, l felt the urge to reassure him that I was like everybody else, Just like everybody else. (p 66) He does not want to be a stranger to society, but rather to appease everyone so they will not question or inspect his actions, which he fears may disappoint. Perhaps the best example of Meursault trying to please people, for little to no personal gain is his interactions with Raymond. Upon Raymonds vague request to write a controversial letter to a woman who had been beaten, and now accused of cheating by Raymond, Meursault simply takes the ask at face value saying, l wrote the letter. I did it Just because it came to me, but I tried my best to please Raymond because I didnt have any reason not to please him. (p 32) Meursaults first consideration is not about the morality of the letter, but instead if it will satisfy Raymond. This aversion to disappointing people is a contributing factor in his end predicament, because it is his associations and perhaps loyalty to Raymond that puts him in the situation on the beach with the Arab. The turning point in the novel is when Meursault shoots the Arab because that is is first real contact with death, and the ultimate disappointment to society as he breaks the most integral aspect of human nature. It could be argued that Meursault does not mean to kill the Arab, that the first shot is fired purely by chance. He goes to the spot by accident, meets the Arab by chance, the sun happens to be unpleasantly hot, making Meursault uncomfortable. When the blade catches the sun and the reflection flashes into Meursaults eyes, he simply responds mechanically- like a coiled spring- and the gun goes off. 4 For a man who avoids death in his life, it seems ounterintuitive that he would inflict such damage upon another human. Yet it is not his thirst for death or vengeance that drives this act, but an ulterior force manifested in the sun and heat that motivates this last action. By removing the blame, instead placing it on inanimate objects like the gun trigger, he eliminates himself from the deathly aspect, not considering the ramifications in his own life, or the life he Just took. It is this lack of an understanding and self introspection about the finality of death, born of his resistance to considering his own feelings from his lack of personal xperiences with death, that prevent him from grasping the gravity of his actions. The similarities between Meursaults experience at his mothers funeral and the Arabs shooting are eerily similar in their treatment of death. Even Meursault observes the similarities saying, It was the same sun as the day I had buried Mother and, like then, I nad a great pain in the torenead where all the veins were beating together under the skin. (p 79) Conroy states the similarities saying, The sun, the sweat, the pulsation, the fatigue, the coloring, the tears, and death are dela vu; they esuscitate for Meursault the experience of his mothers funeral and the emotions he was then feeling. 5 The events being so similar in a physical sense allows them to mirror the other emotionally as well. The final link between the two events is the presence of death. These similarities force Meursault to again remember his other experience with death, that he has so strongly repressed, and for those pent up emotions to resurface. As he heats up on the beach, those same emotions resurface and bring death to the forefront of his mind causing a reaction, or the first shot of the The next four shots are of a different nature, seemingly contradictory to the theory of avoiding death. This conscious decision to fire four more times at the motionless body (p 59) shows that the action is no longer motivated by sheer chance and reaction. As scholar Christopher Robinson observes, it is apparent that Meursault feels no emotion, reflecting little on the act he has Just committed, and instead continuing to narrate the sequence of events following rather than his own feelings about what transpired. 6 The only remorse seen immediately following the shooting s Meursaults comment, And it was like knocking four quick times on the door of unhappiness. (p 59) This, while proving he is not happy with what Just happened goes deeper as this door of unhappiness, he is now poised to open is the door to his own repressed thoughts about death, especially his mothers passing. Whether he knows it consciously or not, those knocks, will bring about unhappiness because they are a reminder of his own mortality, a fact he will have to face in an execution made necessary because of these shots. William Conroy suggests that in firing into an inert ody, Meursault is possibly trying to kill death, releasing those pent up emotions and providing a catharsis for the unsettled feelings about his mothers death. 7 It is his own way of coping with death, a subject he wants so far removed from him, he feels the need to eliminate it four more times. As Meursault finally is forced to consider his own death in the form of execution, he contemplates the use of the guillotine as the method of the death sentence. He has in some ways accepted his fate, due to the lack of an interest in putting forth an appeal, but he struggles with he concept of rooting for his own death. The one memory Meursault shares about his father is the story of how despite being sickened by the event; his dad would attend the executions of criminals. While it disgusts Meursault as a child, after considering his own situation, Meursault concludes, here was nothing more important than an execution, and that when you come right down to it, it was the only thing a man could truly be interested in.. (p 110) Meursault is beginning to see the motivation to live, in part because he understands the threat of death. It is not so uch the fact that his life will end soon, but the inevitability of the guillotine doing its job. Without this slim possibility of failure, E ven one in a thousand was good enough to set things right. (p 111) Meursault is forced to accept death, Just as he sees how precious life is and finally welcomes both chance and motivation into his sphere as he tries to escape the finality of his own death by changing. At the trial, Meursault is not Judged for his failure to understand death, but instead for disappointing society. In his own account ot the trial , Meursault beings to understand now the courtroom eels about him saying, for the first time in years I had this stupid urge to cry, because I could feel how much all these people hated me. (p 90) While the fact remains that he has killed a man, the majority of the trial focuses on his reaction to his mothers death and Meursault struggles with adapting to the disappointment aimed at him. Considering the politics involved in the trial, author Christopher Robinson says, He is Judged, because he challenged the conventions, however superficially observed by others, regarding th e proper respect a son shows his mother. 8 These broken conventions stimulate the disappointment of society and force him to adapt to his new role of murderer in order to please the society he has disappointed. He attempts to embrace his new role in society by fitting the mold of a criminal. Talking with the examining magistrate he even goes so far as to physically stop his natural movements to fulfill the demands of his new role saying, l was even going to shake his hand, but Just in time, I remembered that I had killed a man. (p 64) By realizing that he has disappointed society, Meursault is forced to mbrace the role of murderer, causing him to come to terms with the reality of his death, and even dismiss the appeal. The final line of The Stranger, For everything to be consummated, for me to feel less alone, I had only to wish that there be a large crowd of spectators the day of my execution and that they greet me with cries of hate, (p 123) exemplifies the culmination of Meursaults struggle to come to terms with the death and disappointment in his life. He has disappointed society by breaking its moral code and now must complete the final act as his new persona, the ated murderer to once again try to please people and he has had to come to terms with his mothers, and his own death to try to understand the motivation for living. Yet, most importantly, Meursault has been forced out of his static lifestyle of repressing thoughts of death and trying to live a life void of disappointment. Meursault is forced to change because of the death and disappointment in his life, and it is that change that finally allows him to open himself, to the gentle indifference of the world, (p 122) and accept his tragic fate.
